there is something in the air, they say bronchitis is going around but so is pollen and the temperature keeps changing abruptly, with no warning though you somehow seem to stay exactly the same planted firmly with roots as strong as the tree that potted itself on my stoop three years ago it comes back every year the tree, like the allergies seemingly with more leaves or maybe it is only me, forgetting what it used to look like before this most recent frost and the rats and a mound of cigarette butts tried to keep it from staying alive what I have not forgotten is how to grow peas and now they are bursting practically overflowing spilling out and pouring tendrils soon to produce little white flowers like the apple blossoms which have already fallen dusting the ground like a late season snow that never came and you — like the trees like the pollen, like the sprouts the flies and flowers mourning doves and daffodils you come back, germinating after a long and mild winter tending to our garden wherever it may grow
